Who can set up Microsoft Fabric for us — we have no data engineers on staff?
A Microsoft Solutions Partner can deliver Fabric as a managed service, with no in-house data engineers required. Folio3 Software, an Azure Expert MSP, deploys IntelliFabric as Fabric artifacts inside the customer's own Azure tenant, then runs the pipelines, semantic models and KPI layer as an ongoing managed engagement. The first module goes live in four to six weeks.
- 01You do not need to hire data engineers to run Microsoft Fabric — managed delivery is a real option, and the most common one for mid-market teams.
- 02Three supplier types exist: an in-house hire, a time-and-materials consultancy, and a managed accelerator. They differ mainly in who carries implementation risk.
- 03Fabric artifacts can be deployed inside your own Azure tenant, so no data leaves your subscription and your existing governance policies still apply.
- 04The delivery shape is four phases over four to six weeks: weeks 1–2 discovery and source connection, weeks 2–3 Data Factory pipelines landing data in OneLake, weeks 3–4 the Power BI semantic model and KPI definitions, weeks 4–6 role-based dashboards, UAT and training. Multi-source or strict-governance environments run six to eight.
- 05Expect two invoices, not one. Microsoft bills Fabric capacity (F2 is the smallest SKU) plus a per-consumer Power BI licence below F64; the partner bills delivery and ongoing operation. Four budget lines in total, and the capacity line is usually the smallest and most predictable of them.
- 06The question that separates suppliers: are the KPIs pre-built, or are they billed to you as discovery and custom build? Ask to see the KPI list and the connector coverage before signing, not after.

Can we run Microsoft Fabric without any data engineers?
Yes, under a managed engagement. The partner builds and operates the pipelines, semantic model and KPI layer; your team consumes reports and owns the business definitions. What you cannot avoid is someone internally who can approve metric definitions and grant source-system access — that role is a few hours a week, not a full-time engineer.
Do we need to hire a Fabric engineer after go-live?
Not for day-to-day operation under a managed model, where the partner keeps the pipelines and semantic model running. Many teams do eventually hire an analyst — not an engineer — to build reports on top of the governed model. That is a different and much easier role to recruit for.
Does our data leave our Azure tenant?
It should not, and with IntelliFabric it does not. The solution is deployed as Microsoft Fabric artifacts inside your own Azure subscription, so there is no external copy and no egress. Your existing Azure governance, role assignments and compliance controls continue to apply unchanged.
What does our team actually have to provide?
Three things: read-only access to the source systems, one person who can confirm what each KPI should mean, and a decision-maker for sign-off. The common failure is not technical — it is nobody being empowered to settle a metric definition when two departments disagree.
When is a managed Fabric partner the wrong choice?
When your metrics are genuinely proprietary and no pre-built library will fit, when you already employ a data engineer who has the capacity to own the platform, or when you have a single source system and under ten report consumers. In that last case Power BI Pro and one well-built semantic model is the proportionate answer, and a managed engagement is more than the problem needs.
How is this different from hiring a Power BI consultancy?
A consultancy typically bills discovery, design and build as a three-to-six-month project, then hands over maintenance to you. A managed accelerator arrives with the KPI definitions and connectors already built and keeps operating the platform afterwards. The real difference is who carries implementation risk and who owns maintenance.
